WowApp, a free VoIP app that can bring revenues to end-users, was launched onto the market after attracting investments of USD 30 million, writes Romanian online publication startupcafe.ro. WowApp provides a system whereby users can receive part of the profits earned by the company that created the app.
The app was developed by a software team from Romania and the company behind it was created five years ago by Thomas Knobel, who is also the founder of the VoIP telecom company Nobel. The WoWApp can be used for instant messaging and making voice calls as well as video calls. With WowApp, end-users can earn revenues every time they engage with the people in their WowApp network. End-users are rewarded with the virtual currency named wowcoins that are automatically converted into USD once transferred into end-users own accounts or to NGOs. The so-called "rewards" are obtained when users choose to see advertisements while using the app or choose to use WowApp as a pre-paid phone service and make calls outside the WowApp network. The communication, voice or video calls, in the WowApp network is not charged.
Prices for chargeable calls start at 0.5 wowcoins per minute for calls to the US or UK and reach 1 wowcoin per minute for calls to India, for example.
The app attracted 100,000 users since it was beta-launched a month ago. Romanians make up 25.5 percent of the user base (25,500 users), followed by Russia with 15,500 users, Brasil with 12,000, Ukraine with 5,200 users, Italia with 4,150 users and the US with 4,000 users, the company said.
With this app, end-users can provide financial support to over 2,000 global NGOs. WoWapp works with mobile devices running Android, iOS, Windows and will compete with big names on the VoIP app market such as Skype and Facebook's WhatsApp.
